Whilst every single song on this 52 songs list had a profound impact on me, I don’t think many changed my life to quite the same extent that Metallica’s ‘Memory Remains did.
Not that I had any idea at the time that it would do so.
Taken from the Reload album and released as a single back in 1997, the song enjoyed some ahem, heavy, rotation on music TV, and was instantly a firm favourite with me.
I would be glued to the screen every single time I saw the video on my TV, and I would rock right along with it.
Fortune, Fame, Mirror Vain…
I loved the loud, bold, unashamed swagger of Hetfield’s guitar riffs, I loved the way he snarled and grooved on that mad swing thing, and I especially loved that spellbinding yet wonderfully spooky cameo from Marianne Faithful.
This was the kind of music I loved.
It was the same kind of feeling I got when I would later see the video for The Unforgiven II, a euphoric feeling of “yes! This is the music for me!”
As I’ve said many times on this 52 songs journey, the first time I saw this, I knew I wanted more. Unfortunately, it would be at least another 12 months before I actually got it.
It wasn’t until I met the guy who would become my best friend in high school that Metallica would fully become not only the great obsession of my teenage years, but also one of my favourite bands of all time, but it started here.
It started with The Memory Remains, a simple song that stuck with me and had me clamouring for more.
It was this song that was the catalyst for my first conversation with said best friend, a conversation which ultimately led to him handing me over a whole bunch of metal mix tapes which would again influence and inspire the course of my life.
I’m sitting here now, and I can’t even begin to describe the impact that those tapes would have on my life, but I know that I would never have even come into contact with the person who gave them to me if it were not for my sheer love of The Memory Remains.
It’s for that reason alone that this song remains one of the most important and influential tracks on a list that is entirely dedicated to songs that changed my life.
The Memory Remains by Live is the twelfth song in my list of 52 songs that changed my life. Other entries in this list are below:
